Wheelchair Bandit Not Interested in Posting $100,000 Bail

$100,000 bail set for 71-year-old, wheelchair-bound San Diego man suffering from a number of physical ailments who robbed a Chase Bank branch so he could get medical treatment in federal prison.

He told police he robbed the bank so he can be sent to federal prison, where they have much better health care than on the outside. Which should provide advocates with a new slogan in the health care debate.

The man is no stranger to bank robberies. He robbed a Hillcrest bank in 1997. He turned himself in at that time. Two years later, after getting out of prison, he robbed a City Heights bank.

"It doesn't bother me. I'll be in the federal prison." The 71-year old says he's flat broke, is dying and has no way to pay health insurance. "I have colon cancer, bladder cancer. I've got diabetes type II which is in advanced stage. Also Parkinson's Disease."

The judge set his bail at $100,000 but, the man said he’ll just stay in jai to be taken care of. If convicted the man could be imprisoned for life under California’s three-strikes law.
