Cameron Douglas Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison Pay $300,000
Cameron Douglas, 31, son of Michael Douglas and grandson of Kirt Douglas was sentenced to five years in prison Tuesday in a New York City Court on charges of drug dealing and ordered to pay $300,000.
A charge of conspiracy to distribute drugs carries a minimum of 10 years in jail, but the judge said the government believed Douglas qualified for a shorter sentence. The court seemed to agree with sentiments expressed in at least 37 letters from Douglas' family, friends and supporters who believed Cameron was ready to turn his life around.
Cameron Douglas pleaded guilty to dealing large amounts of methamphetamine and cocaine, as well as heroin possession, in January.
The case dates back to Douglas' July 28, 2009, arrest at a trendy New York hotel as part of a Drug Enforcement Administration investigation. Investigators say Cameron was paid tens of thousands of dollars for trafficking meth, according to court papers obtained by the AP.
Douglas was previously arrested in 2007 on cocaine possession charges. He starred alongside his Oscar-winning father and grandfather, Kirk Douglas, in the 2003 film It Runs in the Family.
Cameron reportedly has had problems with drugs since he was 13 years-old. His brother Eric died of a drug overdose in 2004.
The judge called this Cameron’s “last chance.”
