Aruba Calls Off Underwater Search
Saying they were “pretty certain” the object in an underwater photograph was coral and not the body of Natalee Holloway Aruban authorities called off a diving operation after just two days of searching.
The search began after a Pennsylvania couple gave authorities a photo they took last year while snorkeling. They said a formation at the bottom of the sea that appeared in one of their pictures looked like a skeleton. The FBI began to investigate while Aruban officials started a diving mission. While the photo sparked renewed interest, others said it could be just a bunch of rocks in the basic outline of a skeleton.
The spokeswoman said the prosecutor’s office will continue ‘’to follow every lead’’ as the five-year mystery surrounding Hollloway’s disappearance shows no sign of finally being resolved any time soon. Holloway vanished during her Alabama high school’s graduation trip in May 2005. The key suspect, Joran van der Sloot, was last seen with her the night she disappeared. He has allegedly made confession-like statements in TV interviews in Holland, including a statement captured on hidden camera indicating she suffered a seizure of some sort on the beach and then her body was dumped in the ocean.
Judges in Aruba have ruled there isn’t enough evidence to re-arrest him.
