A 49-year old Pacific Palisades, California man has been arrested and had to post $1-million bail after he was accused of illegally erecting am eight-story movie advertisement on an office building at one of the cities busiest intersection – Hollywood and Highland.
In a dramatic escalation of the LA sign wars its city attorney accuses the man of three misdeamenour city code violation -- two of them sign law violations.
The so-called ”war” against illegal supergraphics in Los Angeles has become increasingly aggressive.
The arrest was called “unusually aggressive” by the LA Times and comes less than a week after the city attorney filed a separate lawsuit involving more than a dozen other supergraphics scattered across the city. Just days after that lawsuit was filed, workers used bolts and wire to wrap the new ad around the face of a 1928 office building on the northeast corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue, a major tourist destination along Hollywood's Walk of Fame. The defendents office said Setareh had an "ownership interest" in the building.
The city arroensy said "The days of lax and inconsistent enforcement of billboard and outdoor advertising laws in this city are over." Critics calls the action and bail excessive and politically motivated noting million dollar bails are most often reserved for the most serious felonies like murder and rape. A Superior Court judge OKd the bail while Loyola Law School professor expressed dismay – the ad space has been advertised for $100,000 a month.
The massive sheets of vinyl sign promotes the film “How to Train Your Dragon" -- was timed to coincide with the 82nd annual Academy Awards ceremony next week, which is staged at the Kodak Theatre down the street.
In any case the defecation has hit the impeller in LA-Hollywood and the movie is getting lots and lots of attention.. .
