U. S. Supreme Court To Rule on State’s Right to Ban Handguns

On March 2 the United States Supreme Court will hear argument about Chicago and Oak Park, Illinois bans on handgun ownership. The case could further rework gun regulations in the aftermath of the 2008 5-4 Court’s reversal of similar regulations in Washington DC It would further impact gun regulations in States and communities nationwide.

Before the Civil War the court had held that the Bill of Rights only limited federal powers and States could impose there own regulations. .At the core of the matter is is self-defense a Constitutional right upon which states should not infringe? Or should local governments have the deciding voice on the question?

A February 19, 2010 Wall Street Journal article asks “Should the Supreme Court overturn an 1886 precedent and strike down state and local gun control laws?” Of the first 500 votes over 75% said “Yes.”
