A Long Time Ago In "Wild and Wooly" East

This is a true story from the late 1960s.
Many years ago in Ohio there were Justices of the Peace that also served as bonding stations mostly for minor offenses like traffic citations. One particularly crusty JP ran a Shell Oil gasoline station on U. S. 40 and was roused very early one morning to accept bond for a transient motorist who had no cash to post the $16.60 bond.
“Do you have anything worth that much?” asked the JP.
“Only thing I have is a brand new spare tire ,” said the put upon motorist.
“What size?,” asked the JP.
‘L78 X 15 white wall,” said the motorist.
“That’ll fit my car,” said the JP, “roll her in and you’re free to go.”
