$4.1 Million Settlement Awarded in False Imprisonment Lawsuit
Larimer County, CO: Tim Masters, 37, has won his lawsuit against alleging false imprisonment, with a settlement agreement of $4.1 million, CNN.com reported Tuesday.
Masters was imprisoned on a murder charge for life in 1999, for which he is now exonerated. He was just 15 years old when police in Fort Collins started their investigation on him and his supposed role in the 1987 sexual homicide of then 37-year old Peggy Hettrick. Masters ended up being convicted largely on circumstantial evidence and testimony from an expert witness, who claimed Masters fit the profile of a sexual predator. DNA evidence played a role in freeing him.
Masters was freed from prison in 2008, and the crime remains unsolved. Masters has also sued the City of Fort Collins and its police department. Those lawsuits have not yet been settled.
Masters who was an aircraft mechanic for 8-years in the Navy is working to be recertified in that field. For now Masters says he plans to get a house, a dog and a car. He has been living in a basement since his release earning a living selling on eBay.
